May 21, 2025
Case #: 2025-003777
On May 20, 2025, at 11:35 p.m., Bradenton Police Officer Shane Sharp attempted to conduct a traffic stop for an observed violation in the 1200 block of Martin Luther King Ave E. Officer Sharp followed the vehicle for several blocks until the driver, later identified as Lenny Macias-Rangel, pulled over. Officer Sharp asked Macias-Rangel - 12 times - to turn off the car due to a concern that he might flee from the traffic stop. When Macias-Rangel refused, Officer Sharp opened the driver's side door and reached to shift the car into park. Macias-Rangel immediately put the vehicle in drive. As Officer Sharp was struggling with Macias-Rangel, a second officer ran to assist, but Macias-Rangel accelerated at a high rate of speed, pinning Officer Sharp's torso against the dashboard. The vehicle traveled approximately 150 feet before crashing into a pole.
Macias-Rangel resisted arrest and struck several officers. He was evaluated for injuries and received medical clearance for transport to the Manatee County jail.
Officer Sharp was rushed to the hospital in a patrol vehicle. He sustained a concussion, arm injuries, including a separated shoulder, and minor leg injuries. He was released from the hospital Wednesday morning and is recovering at home.
Probable cause was obtained to search the vehicle, and Crime Reduction Team detectives located approximately 2.5 pounds of marijuana and 62 THC vape cartridges.
Macias-Rangel, 19, is charged with:
Two counts of aggravated battery of a law enforcement officer
Four counts of battery on a law enforcement officer
Resisting an officer with violence
Fleeing or attempting to elude a law enforcement officer
Possession with intent to sell, manufacture, or deliver a controlled substance
Driving while license suspended, revoked, canceled, or disqualified (second offense)
Macias-Rangel's prior criminal history includes arrests by the Bradenton Police Department on charges of domestic battery, violation of a domestic violence injunction, fleeing to elude a law enforcement officer, leaving the scene of a crash involving unattended property, and driving while license canceled, revoked, suspended, or disqualified.
The investigation is ongoing.
